Too Good to be True?

Do you ever use this saying?

“If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.”

An Unlikely Creation

I’ve used this phrase many times to offer “sage advice” to others. However, after thinking about it, I will never, ever use it again. It’s a cheap, easy, misguided way to make a decision if you’re looking to make something big happen with your life.

It’s a mindset problem and is one reason why most people set their goals so low or don’t believe in chasing the dreams of their youth anymore.

The key question is:  Who or what defines “too good to be true?”  Our own past experiences? Others?

If using either of those options, most people might as well give up their 8pm Warrior ways.  The opportunities we work so hard for are not supposed to be like anything we (or others) have seen before.

Isn’t unimaginable success the whole point?

Here’s a better idea.  Instead of teaching cheap sayings that breed fear and  rule out most  life changing opportunities (joining a startup, leaving your long-time employer, etc.), let’s teach our kids, friends, students, or employees HOW to look at each opportunity with an educated eye.

There are many bad opportunities out there (see my MLM post last week), but there are also good ones too.

Some are so good; they just couldn’t possibly be true…like helping start Facebook, Google, Microsoft, Zimmerman Advertising, <insert your favorite 8pm Warrior startup success here>, or Clear Medical Solutions.

8pm Warriors have to use a better way to judge opportunities.

Have a Great Night!

Warrior of the Week: Ryan J. Sheets

Meet Ryan J. Sheets, the VP & COO of Clear Medical Solutions, an innovative healthcare staffing & consulting firm that is changing the healthcare world.

Ryan is the best person I have ever worked with.  Ever.

  • He’s always thinking.
  • Every client loves working with him.
  • Every team member loves working for him.

Healthcare is a 24/7 world, and Ryan has given up thousands of hours of sleep and “personal time” to support his team or help with complex client needs, regardless of what hour they may pop up.

Sometimes he’s a 3am Warrior.

Yet, never does he complain.  Never does he snap on his colleagues or clients, no matter what they do.  He gives.  He gives. And then he gives more.  Just when you think there is no more to give…

…he gives some more.

He’s a true servant leader and his passion for people is helping change an industry.  This probably sounds ridiculous, but after working with thousands of people, he is the best I have ever worked with.

That’s why he’s this week’s 8pm Warrior of the Week.

If you know another 8pm Warrior that deserves to be featured, please let us know by sharing a link to their blog/website in the comment section, tweeting @8pmWarrior, or posting info on the 8pm Warrior facebook forum.

Have a great night!

Thank you notes

I’ve had all day and two separate Thanksgiving meals to think about what I’m thankful for in my career.  I thought I would share a couple of these thoughts with you.

  • Thank you to those who have helped form our new ideas.  You are some of the best and brightest people I know.
  • To all those who dared to try our new ideas, those who could see the vision before others could:  Thank you!  (It was visionaries like you who brought us the airplane, submarine, and spaceship)
  • I’m thankful for the lessons of life that make us better, more caring, stronger.  They’ve made us who we are, even though they hurt so much.
  • To those who choose to work with us, and allow us to pursue our dreams.  Thank you.  I will not forget your gift.
  • To those who keep working, when the going gets tough.  Your strength inspires me.  Thank you.
  • To those who’ve said “Yes”, when it was easier to say “No”.  Thank you.  (It was your “Yes” that gives us a tomorrow and a future.)
  • Thank you to the friends who share our story with their friends and colleagues.  You are the sponsors of our tomorrow.

To my team members, friends and family:  Thank You for your support!

You mean the world to us.

A Reminder to Say Thanks

Chile mine rescue
Rescued!

I stayed up last night and watched the first miner surface after 69 days trapped underground.  It was an amazing thing to watch a man who was lost, be found, and the passion and ingenuity that was required to rescue them.

It made me thankful for what I have, and for my family, friends, clients, and colleagues at Clear Medical Solutions.

On behalf of our entire team, I want to say thank you to you for the support over the years, and for helping build a special community of medical professionals.

Here’s the news story of the rescue.

A Salute to the 8pm Warriors Among Us

Still in the office at 8pm?

Unless your workday begins at noon, that’s a sure sign you’re probably working on something important.  It’s probably also a good sign sign that the project is probably in great hands.

While it’s probably not healthy to work in the office 8 to 8 every day, sometimes duty calls…and it’s the special people that answer.

Whether it be the deadline for that new building project finance package, the EMR implementation that has go-live around the corner, the new administrator helping to rally the staff on the NOC and PM shifts, or the hundreds of other scenarios we see at Clear Medical Solutions…it is important that someone takes the ball and runs with it.

You know who you are, and thanks for giving it everything you got when something important is on the line.  I’ve taken part in quite a few “after hours” adventures, and I wouldn’t trade it for the world.

Thanks for being great, and if you ever need help we’ll be “8pm Warriors” right with you.

Special thanks to our agents at our Clear Medical Agency division.  I am continually amazed and inspired at what you accomplish long after most have gone home for the day.  Keep up the great work, you’re starting to make a huge difference in the lives of the consultants, nurses, therapists, and hospital leaders you work with.

Happy Birthday…to us!

It began with a dream, some amazing people, and almost unlimited passion.

Now, after just three years, the Clear Medical Solutions group is one of the fastest growing healthcare groups in the United States and has the potential to touch the lives of millions of healthcare professionals, patients, and leaders around the country.

You may be wondering why we’re celebrating three years. It doesn’t sound like a particularily big deal. However, studies show that 8 out of 10 companies fail in the first three years, and the last three years haven’t exactly been in a booming economy.

So, how does it feel?

It feels like…

…seeing your child come into the world
…the “first kiss”
…crossing the finish line
…a hug from a very old friend
…watching the sun rise over the ocean

It feels amazing, and we’re glad you’re here celebrating with us.

We wanted to give you a behind the scenes look at those who’ve help make the dream a reality, and share some of our favorite moments so we put together a short video to share with you.

Thanks to everyone who helped make this dream a reality!

A Mother's Gift

In addition to my mother and my wife, I’m celebrating all mothers around the world today.

It’s amazing to think about what this world would look like without mothers.  I’m not just talking about act of childbirth or pregnancy, but what would it look like if each of our mother’s were not around while we grew up?

Where would we be today without mothers?

My mother supported my dreams, no matter how crazy they were.  My wife carried me (and our two children), through tough times and stressful career situations.  I’ve seen our nurses, therapists, consultants, and leaders working overtime to make ends meet or having to take time off to care for a sick child or family member.

Everywhere I look…mothers are giving.

Yes, sometimes it hurts to be a mother and sacrifices are made, but I know that not one of my wonderful colleagues would be here supporting our “Culture of Caring” without their mother.  On behalf of the entire Clear Medical Solutions family, I want to say “Thank You” for making our world a better place, and for incubating our dreams, our careers, and our mission to make the world a better place…one person, one facility at a time.

Thanks!

A Caring Attitude

The economy has eased our worker shortage temporarily, but I have no doubt it will be back very soon.  With healthcare reform to add 32,000,000 new patients to a system already facing a retiring baby boomer generation, this is going to get very interesting…and stressful.

In an industry with unlimited choices, where will all the talent go?

I believe they will seek to work with servant leaders who are knowledgeable, engaged, and caring.  With burnout reaching epidemic proportions, and many medical professionals re-evaluating their career paths, caring will not only lead to your success as a leader, but to an increased quality of life for your people.

If you want to compete and make a difference, you will need to have an attitude of caring…and mean it.

That’s why it made my top 4.

Does it make yours?
