Pride Comes Before a Fall

Weak people can be wildly successful because they aren’t too proud to ask for help.

Are you ever weak?

If someone has a weakness holding them back, the first step is admitting it.  Don’t try to hide it.  We can see.  Don’t try to fake it.  We all know.  Don’t try to control it. You can’t fix it yourself.

Just admit it and ask for help.

Don’t think this applies to you?  I need a little reminder myself sometimes.

We all have weakness!

I almost got fired from my first leadership job after school because I was too proud to admit what I didn’t know.  I alienated my team.  Performance fell apart.

I fell.

We may be skilled at many things, but we all have a weaknesses somewhere that will bite us if we’re too proud.

  • If we’re too proud to ask for help, we alienate those who can help us.
  • If we’re too proud to learn, the teachers will leave us.
  • If we’re too proud to admit our weakness, we fall behind.

It’s something to think about tomorrow.

  1. EXCELLENT!!!!!!!! Never put better. Pride is such a glob in the pipe, fly in the ointment, crick in the hose, ugly characteristic when it distances and impedes growth. Please write lots more “to yourself” !!! and thank you for sharing.

  2. Rebecca, thanks for the kind words of encouragement. Pride is such a difficult topic to bring up because of Pride. :-)

    It seems like these sort of posts always have fewer responses and shares. People don’t always like looking in the mirror. Thanks for walking down that road with me. I hope we’re both strong for it.

  3. I agree with everything you say here Aaron except the opening statement. Weak people could be wildly successful but usually aren’t because they don’t know WHO to ask for help or afraid to ask if they do. Weak people tend to make excuses and continue accomplishing NADA! However you are SO RIGHT when you say all people have weaknesses and all bright people will always be open to learn something new.
    For instance, I suck at creative merchandising. Oh, I have ideas about where I want a display to be set up and the message I want it to convey to customers coming into the store but in actually creating it…#FAIL. However my staff member, Nate, rocks creativity. He didn’t believe he would be good at merchandising but he watched and asked questions of those on staff who were good at it.
    Kevin, my assistant, is my personality opposite. I’m all about deadlines, analytics, engagement, finding new business, being keyed up and in a hurry. His comfort zone is in maintaining customers and focusing on our sales budget. He is good at extracting what the team needs from my list of have tos and get dones and finds a way to accomplish everything seamlessly with no ruffled feathers. Even our part-timers have talents we utilize in between checking out customers.

    Have I made hiring mistakes? Absolutely but the team weeds the error out almost instantly. In 20+ years of management I have fired only 3 employees. Most were weak people who did not want to associate with those who are on a mission to be successful.

    This all has been my experience anyway.I’ve seen many managers afraid to hire people who are smarter than they are. Not me. Give me the brightest and brainiest every time because they will only make me more successful in the end.
